New Year’s Eve is 100 days from now. It’s time to think about resolutions for 2020! I know, I know…100 days is far away. There are so many other holidays to get ready for. Birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate. But as we all know, this time will creep up on us before we know it. To be ready, I want you to start thinking about the resolutions that you plan to set for next year.
We all know the statistics on the failure rate of resolutions (only 8% of people achieve theirs), but consider this study: In his audio class entitled “Goals”, Zig Ziglar shares a study done by the Harvard Business School in 1979. In this study, Harvard University asked its graduating MBA class one question on goal setting:
Have you set written goals and created a plan for their attainment?
The results prior to graduation?
- 84% of the entire class had set no goals at all
- 13% of the class had set written goals but had no concrete plans
- 3% of the class had both written goals and concrete plans
They followed up at the 10 year reunion and found that the 13% of the class that had set written goals but had not created plans, were making twice as much money as the 84% of the class that had set no goals at all. Even more remarkably, the 3% of the class that had both written goals and a plan, were making ten times as much as the rest of the class! Yes, the entire remaining 97% of the class!
It goes without saying that goal-setting is certainly one key to success.
From the time we were able to write in an agenda book, we’ve been encouraged to write our goals. Many of us are familiar with SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound) goals, but have you considered incorporating of Law Of Attraction into your goal setting?
Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s establish a working definition of “goal”. According to Wikipedia, “A goal is an idea of the future or desired result that a person or a group of people envisions, plans and commits to achieve. “ Based on this definition, we accept that our goals are neither vague nor fleeting. We have to actually plan and commit to our goals.
Specificity vs. The Law Of Attraction
After watching films like “The Secret“, many people are unsure if they should be too specific when they set their goals. The documentary style movie states that you should allow the Universe to bring you your desires and not be too hung-up on the “how-to’s’ or ‘from-where’s”. “The Universe knows the best way” is its ethos. So how does goal-setting fit within the Law Of Attraction?
It’s actually quite simple…
We all know that our goals should be as specific as possible. These specifics include completion date, plan for achievement or stepping-stone goals and highly specific details of the goal itself. For example, you may set a goal to have an increase in turn-over of $10,000 by the end of the quarter. You immediately devise a plan to increase sales and begin to lay out your milestones setting smaller stepping stone goals that will lead to the attainment of your desired outcome.
Again, how does this fit into “The Universe knows the best ” approach taught by most Law Of Attraction experts?
Honestly, they are one in the same. The Law Of Attraction is always responding to your personal vibration. Your vibration is affected by what you think and how you feel. So when you get specific in your goals and set time-limits for specific tasks, the Law Of Attraction will respond to the thoughts and the feelings associated with them. By staying focused on your desired outcome and feeling positive about its completion and attainment you are super-charging your Law Of Attraction actions. As long as you don’t feel negative about your goal or the plan you have devised, goal-setting like this can be very powerful.
However, if you set your intentions too high or make your goals unrealistic, then the Law Of Attraction will work against you! You’ll feel overwhelmed, doubtful and stressed. The Universe will respond to these feelings and your attraction vibration will be the opposite of what you want. Overextending yourself will lead to negative thoughts and emotions about your goal. By setting realistic goals that still stretch you you can fully utilize the Law of Attraction to your advantage.
The premise of the Law of Attraction is that you always get more of what you focus on. Consistently placing your attention on anything makes it grow and expand. So, by setting goals and working a plan to achieve them you are actually focusing your energy, thoughts and emotions towards that end. By having set time-limits for the achievement of each step of your goal and the goal itself your thoughts, energy and feelings are also focused in that direction. By setting SMART goals you are following one of the fundamental rules of the Law of Attraction – what you put our attention on expands.
The key is to always remain focused on the goal itself and not on the lack of it! You must also ensure you do not get frustrated if it appears that you may not reach your goal in the time-limit you specified. Any negative vibrations will repel your goals because the Law Of Attraction will pick up on your thoughts of “I can’t” or “It’s too hard for me”. Not only will the Law Of Attraction repel the goals that bring you joy and excitement, it will draw more people and situations to frustrate you and test your patience.
Set realistic easily managed goals at first. Once you become proficient at goal-achievement you can start to stretch yourself a little more each time. As you begin to see overwhelming evidence that the Law Of Attraction exists and that it is working in your favor you will be able to set you goals higher and bigger until there is nothing you cannot achieve.
While you are pursuing your goals, these are the thoughts and feelings that you want to experience as frequently as possible! Every positive thought and feeling you have about your goal is attracting more things to you that will help you achieve that goal! The more success you have in manifesting your goals, the bigger and greater your life will become. I think that is a resolution the we can all agree on!
